Winter Prep Checklist: 9 Home Maintenance Tasks to Finish Before the Holidays

Fall is a busy time of year as we all settle back into our routines, and before we know it, the holidays are here. In the middle of it all, home maintenance tasks can easily slip through the cracks. This month, I’m sharing a simple checklist so nothing important gets overlooked. Knock these out now, and you won’t have to think about them during the busy holiday season and beyond.

Our winters in San Antonio are mild most of the time, but we all remember that a hard freeze can show up when we least expect it. A little preparation goes a long way.

Your Winter Prep Checklist

☐ Seal drafts and insulate windows and doors
Check the weatherstripping and caulking around your windows and doors. Even small gaps let your heated air out and cold air in, which can mean higher energy bills.

☐ Have your HVAC serviced
Your heating system works hard when the first cold snap hits. A professional tune-up now helps catch small problems before they become expensive ones, and it’s easier to schedule before the holiday rush.

☐ Clean gutters and downspouts
After the leaves fall, clogged gutters can cause water to back up and damage your roof, siding, and foundation. Make sure water drains away from your home.

☐ Inspect your roof for damaged or missing shingles
Look for shingles that are cracked, curling, or missing. Catching damage early can prevent leaks later, especially if we get a wet winter.

☐ Drain or winterize your sprinkler system
Water left in sprinkler lines and exposed pipes can freeze and crack. Take a few minutes to winterize the system and protect any exposed plumbing.

☐ Schedule chimney and fireplace cleaning
If you plan to enjoy cozy fires this season, have your chimney inspected and cleaned first. It’s an important safety step, and the good professionals book up quickly.

☐ Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
Test every detector and replace the batteries if needed. It takes just a couple of minutes and is one of the most important things on this list.

☐ Trim trees and branches near your home and walkways
Overhanging limbs can damage your roof or fall during a storm. Winter is a good time to trim, but if you have oaks, check the best timing and approach with a qualified arborist.

☐ Stock up on emergency supplies
Keep batteries, flashlights, shelf-stable food, and water on hand in case of a power outage or severe weather. It’s much easier to gather them now than when everyone else is at the store.
